Lawrence, Kansas – April 19, 2025 – Optimal Electric Vehicles (Optimal EV) is excited to announce the deployment of two of its low-floor electric (LFE) shuttle buses into service on Lawrence Transit's interlined Routes 2 and 3. These routes, connecting Central Station and Downtown to North Iowa/Timberedge Road, collectively provide approximately 90,000 rides annually and operating over 600 weekday miles.
The LFE buses are engineered with Optimal EV's proprietary No-Kneel chassis, allowing for an ultra-low 11-inch step-in height and quick deployment of an ADA-compliant accessibility ramp without the need for kneeling suspension. This design ensures easy access for all passengers, including those with mobility challenges. Powered by Proterra's 123kW battery system, the buses offer a top speed of 70 mph and are capable of climbing 30% grades, making them well-suited for Lawrence's varied terrain.
Optimal EV's commitment to quality is underscored by its 33+ years of automotive engineering experience. The company's engineering group has focused on electric vehicle and system design since 2015, integrating years of expertise into the LFE’s design and manufacturing. This extensive experience ensures that Optimal EV's products are not only environmentally friendly but also reliable and durable.
Central States Bus Sales, a trusted partner in the industry, will provide comprehensive support for these buses in the field. With six locations across Missouri, Illinois, Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Alabama, Central States offers a full range of services, including maintenance, parts, and technical support. Their team of ASE-certified technicians ensures that the LFE buses will receive the highest level of service and care, keeping them operating efficiently and reliably for Lawrence Transit.
The deployment of these electric shuttle buses is made possible through the Federal Transit Administration's (FTA) Low or No Emission (Low-No) Program. Lawrence Transit has been awarded multiple Low-No grants, including funding for these two buses, to replace older diesel and gasoline-powered vehicles with cleaner, more efficient electric vehicles.
